Have you heard about the amazing health benefits associated with Turmeric? This spice traditionally used in curries, can offer us some surprising advantages to boost our body’s wellbeing.

Did you know turmeric (Curcuma longa) is a powerful anti-inflammatory and antioxidant? This is due to the curcumin, the yellow pigment found in turmeric, which not only gives a bright hue but also a range of health benefits including antibacterial and antimicrobial. Because of these wide ranging functions, turmeric has been further studied in relation to improving patients suffering with arthritis, eye conditions, cancer, heart disease and Alzheimers. In addition it has also shown in clinical studies to lower cholesterol and blood pressure.

The recommended daily intake of turmeric is one teaspoon and this can be added into your food (but take care as the natural yellow colouring can stain) or taken as capsules. Combining turmeric with black pepper has ben shown to increase curcumin absorption by an astounding 2000% and other studies recommend taking with fats such as olive oil.  You can also try adding one teaspoon to hot milk (the natural fat in milk will aid absorption) and make yourself a turmeric latte!
